Laurie : You have no idea!

Hey!! It's Bad Mr. Frosty with his VERY FIRST MOD for anyone but himself! :)
This one's a doozy!! It's got more features than most expect (Including me)
from a modding pack but that's just the kind of guy I am!

Here's a great main menu, it's got it all including context sensitive help
or alternatively a description window.. and the extended help is the RENEGADE
equivalent of a MacGuyverism. There are a few parts of the menu that may or
may not apply to your board... I will discuss how to change those later on.

DISCLAIMER: This mod works GREAT on my BBS but I do not guarantee it will
work on yours... so if your computer blows up after you install
it don't come crying to me, you use this at your own risk!

HISTORY:
	I'd give you a history but who reads those? I know I don't :)

QUICKY INSTALL....

For those of you so impatient you cannot wait to install, just unzip
all this to one directory and type "FROSTY <MAIN BBS DIR>" with NO trailing
backslash "\" for example... "FROSTY C:\RENEGADE" After that's done skip
ahead to Install Configure to learn how to set up the space to toggle.

PRE INSTALL... Things you should know...

First and Foremost you MUST be running RENEGADE from the MAIN RG Directory...
This is usually the case but just in case... :) So when you hit ALT-J it
should put you in the Renegade Directory whetever that might be.

My Frostybars use the M Flag for something I call "Space to toggle" some of
the more impatient users don't like to sit through ANSIs especially if they
are familiar with the old hotkey menus. In order to set up the space to
toggle feature read the Install Configure section. Make sure you are not
using your M flag for anything else otherwise you'll have troubles.

This is right off of my board with a few modifications... The space in the
middle of the main menu is for your BBS's logo. If you don't have one it'll
just be an empty space :)

I run a multi node board (Well, sorta :) ) so I have a Multi node ops menu
(Which I have graciously included) if you do not run multi nodes then you can
either replace the Multi Node Ops choice with something else or run another
node :) .

I have also added a rumor door, if you do not have a rumor you can replace
that choice or get yourself a rumor, hey, there might even be one in this
pack!

My Chat with Sysop went to a Chat menu... now I cannot give you EVERY menu
I have on my board so if you do not have a chat menu you need to go into
your menu editor and edit FROST18... Of the items with the command key "*"
the last one should be:

3. *
5. -^
6. CHAT

You should change it to:

3. *
5. -L
6. %CL

Then quit back one step and copy the one you just edited before itself twice
and modify the second (middle) of the three. Change it to:

3. *
5. OC
6. 1

Then modify the third (last) of the three thusly:

3. *
5. -^
6. Frost

Then you're set!! Personally I think you'd be better off just getting a
chat menu. :)

I have a User Biographies door that I run off the main menu... Hence the
user biogs option. I debated with myself whether or not to leave this in
since it's not likely that everyone else has a user biography door that is
called up by a batch file BIOG.BAT, but I have not logged on to a RENEGADE
board yet that didn't have SOME sort of user biography or registry. If it's
a door just replace the name BIOG.BAT with that of your door and if the drop
file is anything other than DOOR.SYS change it accordingly. If your Registry
is another menu then edit menu FROST4 accordingly. Barring that you can
edit the option.

Cursor keys work remotely but are a bit slow... this was a last minute change
to this MOD (Today's the deadline!!) so it's a tad buggy... The bugs will be
worked out in version 4.0... It does work though.

And the last thing you should know before you start is that mine is a non-
profit BBS so I have a donation information command "$" off the main menu
that displays the donation and user levels and who gets what access and
whatnot. If yours is a business you might want to change the extended help
to reflect that. As it is it says Donation information.. And you will need
to provide your own donation info files, I've included a few empty pages so
you'll be able to keep the Frostybars look.

INSTALL... SETUP

The following setup is for RENEGADE 10-05 or later. If you are running an
older version of RENEGADE see INSTALL... PRE 10-05.

To set up FrostyBars 3.3 on your *RENEGADE 10-05 OR LATER* simply unzip all
the files in this archive to a directory and type "FROSTY C:\<DIR>" Where
<DIR> is the directory where your BBS is located. NOTE: Do not include a
trailing backslash ("\") so if your BBS path is RENEGADE you would type:
"FROSTY C:\RENEGADE"

This program assumes you have a copy of PKUNZIP in your path.

This program assumes you use the standard MISC and MENU directories, if this
is not the case edit the batch file accordingly before running it.

This program creates a subdirectory of your Main RG directory called FROSTY
to hold certain files essential for the smooth operation of this main menu.

This program assumes you have specified the Main RG directory in your setup
if your BBS doesn't know it's own directory make certain you read INSTALL...
HELPCHECK and edit the commandline accordingly.

INSTALL... PRE 10-05

Frostybars will work fine with RENEGADE versions previous to 10-05 IF you
are willing to edit 19 menus. In order to install this to a pre 10-05 ver
of RENEGADE follow the above instructions and edit the MAINMN.ANS... after
the "Time Left:" type in "%TL#08" and delete two characters so the line you
just edited is two characters short when displayed in DOS. These two spaces
will resolve themselves when displayed in RENEGADE. If it won't display
right use an editor and tweak the ANSI till it works. Then go into the menu
editor and replace the prompt for ALL of the FROSTX Menus... Replace the
"|00%DFPrmptx%" with "|00%LF" After you do that for all the menus FROSTYbars
will work fine for your pre 10-05 RENEGADE BBS. The only drawback is that
the time left will not update everytime you make a move. I have not tested
it in this mode so if there are any problems (I can think of one potential
problem) call my board and I'll try and help you.

INSTALL... CUSTOMIZE

I've made a conscious effort on my BBS to keep all the new menus going to
default RENEGADE menus.. then from the Renegade menu I FIRSTCMD it to the
frostybar menus for those with their Frostybar access flag set. This way
I can make sure that my creations will be compatible with a BBS that has
just been installed. However, it is not always possible to have default
options when many of the features you've come to depend on are not standard
equipment. That is one of the reasons I have endeavored to make my new
Frostybars 3.3 easy to customize.

In order to change ANY of the options on the main menu you need to edit the
MAINMN.ANS ansi as well as the FROSTxy.ans where X is the number of the
command edited (See table 1-1) and y is the letters A,B and C. A DOS editor
will do for the latter though you may want to use an ANSI editor for the
former.

As far as commands go, in the previous versions of Frostybars you would have
to go to through EACH submenu and edit the command of the hotkey... Not so
in v3.3, now you just edit the menu that corresponds to the command you are
changing. Just like editing a normal menu.

To accomplish this ease of editing I made all the hotkeys macros which move
to the right menu and execute the command. The commands are executed with
the "*" character to accomodate the macro's inability to recognize ^M as a
carriage return :)

When you look at any of the FROSTx Menus you will notice that they have a
series of commands triggered by the character "*" The first six will be:

3. *
5. -F
6. FROSTxy

These are here to make the choices flash when selected, A feature exclusive
(At least as of 9-5-95) to Frostybars 3.0 and above. Everything after these
files is the actual command. And this can be edited just as easily and as
fast as a normal non-lightbar menu (Another frostybar exclusive) refer to
the following table for which menu corresponds to which command.

	FROST1 - Files FROST10 - Bulletins
	FROST2 - Messages FROST11 - Note to Sysop
	FROST3 - E-Mail FROST12 - Automessage
	FROST4 - User Biographies FROST13 - Multi Node Ops
	FROST5 - Goodbye FROST14 - Online Games
	FROST6 - Rumors FROST15 - List of Users
	FROST7 - Expert Mode FROST16 - Your Settings
	FROST8 - BBS List FROST17 - Voting Booth
	FROST9 - Time Bank FROST18 - Chat with Sysop

                              TABLE 1-1

It is extremely simple to do these edits compared to other lightbar menus
that support hotkeys. I have on my board menus that look like other soft-
ware, I call them Menu Emulators (Maybe I'll include one next pack :) and
the FROST10 Menu was for that... It took me less than a minute to change
that command and the ANSIs to reflect that change. So even though it's more
work than you're used to for editing a menu it's well worth it.

INSTALL... CONFIGURE

To configure Frostybars on your BBS you need to edit your main menu and
then rename it to MAIN1.MNU. This is a simple process and shouldn't take
you more than a couple of minutes.

Goto the menu editor and pull up your MAIN menu... You'll need to add three
new commands to it. Insert these anywhere.

(1 and 2 are always blank unless otherwise specified)

New command 1

3. FIRSTCMD
4. FM&EA
5. -^
6. FROST

New command 2

3. <----------- one space
4. EA
5. OF
6. +M

New command 3

3. <----------- one space
4. EA
5. -^
6. FROST

Then add a third menu description line that says "Space to toggle" or
something along those lines.

Then shell to DOS (ALT-J if you're in RENEGADE) and go to the Menu directoty
then "copy main.ans main1.ans" (Long story! :) )

That's it! You're all set up! Everyone who calls (Assuming you have the
M flag off by default) will get the great new menu and when they hit space
they'll get the old menus... and they can switch back just as easy! :)

INSTALL... HELPCHECK

Frostybars have a wicked cool extended help file setup. It uses some fancy
footwork to display several "Pages" of help in the spot where your logo
normally resides. What it does is it displays a help menu that tells them
some of the features, and since there are so many it also tells them to hit
plus or minus to fo forward or back a page. When they hit plus or minus it
runs a batch file that rotates the helpfile and copies the file HELP.BMF to
your main RG directory. The next time the main menu loads it checks for that
file, if it exists it will copy over the files with a unrotated set under
the assumption that the last person did not leave the Help menu at the first
page. The beauty of this is you don't waste time copying unrotated help
files over unrotated help files. In order to do this the %M directory must
be accurate. But your BBS probably won't run if it wasn't so...

INSTALL... DONATION INFO

Same as the above setup.. if it's been run it will copy DONATE.BMF to the
main RG directory and if it is found at main menu startup it will replace
the rotated files with a unrotated set. This is accomplished like so...

If exist %M\*.BMF BMFRESH.BAT %M

Which calls up a batchfile which does the following...

if exist %1\BHELP.BMF GOTO HELP
if exist %1\BDON.BMF GOTO DONATE
:HELP
COPY /y %1\FROST\H*.* %1misc
COPY /y %1\FROST\E*.* %1misc
DEL %M\BHELP.BMF
if exist %1\BDON.BMF GOTO DONATE
GOTO END
:DONATE
COPY /y %1FROST\D*.* %1MISC
DEL %M\BDON.BMF
:END
ECHO ***BMF's cool MOD reset itself*** >> %M\FROST\FROSTY.LOG

Pretty slick, eh? :)

If you're running multi nodes and two people access the help at the same
time they'll just end up skipping pages, no way around it, sorry. well
there is it's just tedious... but if you want to duplicate all the commands
and put in node access flags then copy all the files and change the batch
files go ahead... But I wouldn't bother :)

And the Frosty.LOG is pointless... It's just an option which you can edit
so that it appends to your Sysop.log... but since the %L MCI doesn't work
in doors I cannot make it do that for you. Just replace everything after
the ">>" with the full path and filename of your sysop.log... if you want :)

INSTALL... ANSIs

REMEMBER to edit the help and donation files in the FROST directory,
otherwise if you edit the ones in the misc directory when the unrotated
files overwrite the rotated ones you're gonna have to do it again!

If you end up editing the Mainmn.ans with THEDRAW, you might have trouble
with it scrolling up and the lightbars not aligning... if this happens you
need to go into a text editor and delete the bottom lines up to right before
you get to the actual ANSI... There's usually a bunch of empty lines and a
"<[0m<[255D" at the bottom of and ANSI after THEDRAW gets a hold of it...
those need to be deleted along with any unnecessary carriage returns.

The small ANSIs can easily be edited using the DOS editor... on DOS 6.22
you can create escape characters in the DOS editor by pressing and holding
CTRL then P, then hit "["

When editing the context Sensitive help make certain you're in overwrite and
not in insert mode.. that way you can be certain it will be the proper length
Center the help as you like it.

INSTALL... CONCLUSION

OK! That should be it.. I wish I could have spent more time on this Mod but
I joined TMS kinda late in August and I didn't have too much time to plan
for this. :) Tonight, is the deadline and I'm rushing to get this done.

If you have ANY questions on how to work this MENU give my board a call. The
info is in ANSI.TXT...

And if you're looking to join a NET as intelligent and dynamic as this MOD
have a look at FISHNET.ZIP.. it's all the info you need to join.

If your looking for some custom Menus give my BBS a call and I might have
enough time to make you some for a small donation :)

Look for a killer MESSAGE MENU by me in the next pack... it'll put this menu
to shame!

THANKS TO

Tom, Laurie, Bob and Jim, if it weren't for them I wouldn't be in a good mood
all the time! :)

Sherlock Ohms and aN0N who's mods first introduced me to the world of modding

Tori Amos and The Breeders for providing background music while I worked

TCI Cable for carrying crappy shows that prompted me to turn off the TV and
work on this instead :)

The users on my BBS for their patience as I took the board down to test new
ideas.

Essbee for all his help, the Logo and upping this for me since I can't
telenet! :)

				The End!
